@Timm: Thanks for the quick answer. Although the Lenin Avenue leads to the main square, the square itself had no official name. The buildings on the main square had street addresses, as 10 Kurchatov st. for the palace of culture, and 2/12 Lazaryev st. for the shopping centre.
Having read the text again, you have addressed the 16-storeyed appartment block (14/1 Kurchatov st.) as the Voskhod building (with the coat of arms of the USSR on the top*). In fact, the grocery No 2 was called as Voskhod shop, it can be found behind the high apartment block (photo: http://www.panoramio.com/photo/16251482#comment)
* or the building 5 Lazaryev st, with the coat of arms of the Soviet Republic of Ukraine (the design is similar)
OK, now I stop arguing, these are minor, irrelevant issues, comparing with the nicely elaborated journal.
Take care! :-)

@cs_szabo: Thanks you! 1) I thought I remembered that name from our guide. It might be unofficial, as it's the continuation of Lenin boulevard/avenue? 2) The name Voskhod building I have either from a Google map or the title of a photo I saw.

Hi Timm,

Nice job, congratulations! It's one of the best journey report I've ever read.
Some questions:
1) Do you know the origin of the denomination Lenin Square? As I know, this main square (in front of the Palace of culture) had no official name at all. The buildings on the main square were addressed to the Kurchatov Street, and Lazaryev Street respectively.
2) The shopping centre (2, Lazaryev St.) is marked on the map as "Voskhod Building". Where this name came from? The small "Voskhod" grocery shop is located between the 16-storeyed appt. block (14, Kurchatov St, at the corner of Lazaryev St), and the 5-storeyed long appt. block (16, Kurchatov St).
